Sports Profanity

Earlier this week I was having a relaxing night, and decided to get on myspace (typical teenager) and was searching through my friends pages. When I came across my roommate’s page her quote made me chuckle so I decided I would write about it.

The quote was by Gordie Howe, a famous hockey player. He said “Professional athletes are bilingual; they speak both English and profanity” this made me laugh because in my opinion it is so true. I think it’s true with not only professionals but any competitive sports. For example, like I said in my first blog I have played soccer competitively for a majority of my life and when you practice over 30 hours a week and come game time you make stupid mistakes. It seems like some kind of a curse word, or one related, comes out of mine or my teammates mouth. So I couldn’t agree more with Gordie Howe, especially since professional games are played in front of thousands of people so you’re also worried about being humiliated. I also think that the quote can be interpreted in another way, part of sports is the rivalry and the talking crap that comes with it. I think that talking crap to the other team not only gets you pumped up, but it also puts on a show for the audience.

oh man i LOVE Gordie Howe! He is soooo cool. he's pretty much a bad ass!!! i have always liked him, but i have never heard that quote before. I absolutely love it. And i think it's really true as well. I have played many sports and i know what it's like to talk trash and curse on the field. Possibly the greatest thing about it is cuz the crowd doesnt know what you're saying ya know. For football at least they dont. There is so much going on they cant hear. I played the line and thats even worse! There are things that i have said that will just tear people up cuz they couldnt imagine me saying stuff like that. I'm not gonnna lie, there have been some stuff out of my mouth that woould get my grounded for my entire life if my parents knew! haha

I don't think that I could ever not agree with that quote because I cause in sports all the time. I've never heard of Gordie Howe, but I'll have to go look him up. The best is when in track when other athletes talk trash while somebody is trying to perform.
